Jason Hicks of Jaywalker

Jason Hicks doing his thing

Hoping to inspire and get their music out there to as many as possible, Australian band JAYWALKER have managed to pick up US management, sell over 2000 copies of their music at live shows and help some good causes along the way. Jason Hicks, the lead singer and songwriter of the band, visited UTS to have a chat with Patrick Catanzariti about his experience so far and the band’s future plans.

Jamshid ‘Jumps’ Khadiwala of The Cat Empire

The Cat Empire

The Cat Empire is a touring machine. They’ve spent most of the six years since the release of their debut album, The Cat Empire, on the road. The unstoppable Australians have toured with the likes of James Brown and Ozomatli and played for an hour at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Travesties

A sand-yellow canvas, vaguely reminiscent of a cubist artwork, veils the stage. Geometric shapes and abstract images are linked together loosely. The warning on this packet is that Tom Stoppard’s ‘Travesties’ is not for those who enjoy facile entertainment. It will require you to work the cogs of your mind, connect the dots, decipher wordplay and confront your own ways of thinking.

On May 20th last year at the Sydney Writers Festival, UTS students handing out copies of ‘Festival News’ were approached by security guards and staff. All copies of the newspaper were impounded within the first day with only vague explanations provided.

Defiance

More than half a century after WWII, compelling stories of triumph amidst tragedy continue to emerge. In his latest directorial effort, Academy Award winner Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond) tells one such tale.

The Man From Mukinupin

I came out of The Man From Mukinupin impressed but dissatisfied. It was technically proficient, yet it never managed to grab me and make me really care about the characters. The story, which explores the dark side of Indigenous repression in the early 20th century is an important story to tell, but there are other plays that I feel do it more effectively.

Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie

Five minutes, thirty-eight seconds. That’s how long the eager crowd at the Enmore Theatre applauded for an encore by Death Cab for Cutie. Now, I’m no serial concert-goer, but that’s a bloody long time to clap your hands together. And I have to admit that I was reduced to a squealing schoolgirl when lead singer Ben Gibbard emerged from the shadows to play, “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”, a beautiful song about a promise to a dying lover or a song about a severe case of stalking, whatever floats your boat.

A Complete History of My Sexual Failures

A Complete History of My Sexual Failures charts the cringe-worthy odyssey of its brave and unashamed British creator Chris Waitt, who is determined to fix his hapless love life.
