In a style somewhat reminiscent of American Pie, comes Will Gluck’s poorly-conceived directorial debut Fired Up!

This painfully clichéd comedy is centred around high school jocks Nick and Shawn (Eric Olson and Nicholas D’Agosto) who lie their way into cheerleading camp and live out every teen boy’s fantasy.

The seemingly perfect premise for any teenage comedy about sex is translated onto the screen in a fatally tame manner. Lacking the guts of the American Pie creators, Fired Up! is simply not rude or crude enough. Its most daring moments are too safe and offer its audience minimal laughs as a result.

To be fair to the lead performers, Olson and D’Agosto are indeed watchable and the genuine sense of the brotherly bond between the two make them a suitable, even likeable pair of characters. Their quick-witted nature and mildly amusing neologisms are enough to keep audiences watching, but only just.

The film doesn’t come anywhere close to the iconic Western comedies that it so obviously emulates. Admittedly though, to Gluck’s credit, at no point does it masquerade as a teen masterpiece and this is made clear through, perhaps the film’s funniest sequence, where the entire cheer camp watch Bring It On and collectively recite its script, line by line.

In fact, Gluck’s film unashamedly sources much of its humour from such pop cultural allusions and, as a result, his work is separated and somewhat saved from becoming another banal, forgettable and completely disposable teen flick.

Fired Up! is not a truly awful film, it’s just mindless and probably best left for those desperate DVD days.
